PNP starts hunting inmates freed due to GCTA who refuse to surrender Friday

The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday said they will shift to manhunt operations starting Friday as the 15-day surrender period given by President Rodrigo Duterte to inmates convicted of heinous crimes who were granted freedom due to good conduct lapse.
“Effective tomorrow Friday, the PNP shifts to manhunt operations after the deadline today Thursday,” said Police Brigadier General Bernard Banac, the PNP spokesman, said in a statement.
Banac said they are waiting for the revised list to be provided by Department of Justice as many convicts went directly to Bureau of Corrections.
He reiterated that the manhunt will be done with or without a reward.
“Though a reward may be helpful to entice possible informants against convicts who will fail to surrender,” said Banac.
“But the PNP will exert all efforts to arrest them through our tracker teams led by CIDG following the prescribed procedures and with utmost respect for human rights,” he added.
The PNP believes through swift and relentless arrests, they can convince and expedite the surrender of more freed convicts.
“That’s why we continue to urge them to surrender and turn themselves in even while being tracked down after the deadline. All police units nationwide will remain open to assist them in getting back to the BuCor,” he said.
As of 6 am, September 19, the PNP recorded 579 surrenderees where 349 turned over to BuCor.
On the part of National Capital Region Police Office, Major General Guillermo Eleazar also urged the 176 freed inmates in Metro Manila to surrender.
“Based on Bureau of Corrections’ records, there were 202 Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) with recorded Metro Manila address,” said Eleazar.
“Out of those 202 PDL, 21 have surrendered in police stations, three directly to BuCor while two died due to natural causes with a total of 26 listed in NCR. On the other hand, 24 PDL have surrendered though not recorded as residents of Metro Manila, making a total of 48 surrenderees,” he added.
