PNP tops World Police and Fire Games

The Philippine National Police ( PNP) bagged 54 medals, of which 18 were  gold, to rule the 2019 World Police and Fire Games in Chengdu, China last August 8 to 19.

In a statement, Police Brigadier General Bernard Banac, PNP spokesperson, said the 182-strong delegation won a total of 54 medals.

"The PNP athletes in eight events garnered 18 gold, 21 silver, and 15 bronze, the highest number of medals," Banac said.

They won four gold medals in track and field, five in taekwondo and nine in karatedo.

Silver and bronze medals were won in badminton, basketball, taekwondo, track and field, karatedo, wrist wrestling and wrestling.

"The PNP taekwondo team chipped in a total of 19 medals (five gold, 10 silver, and four bronze)... and now preparing for the coming PNP Mini- Olympics under Police Brigadier General Roberto Fajardo," Banac said.

The PNP Responders basketball team, the only Asian squad to reach the finals, captured the silver medal against United States Customs & Border Protection, Banac added.

Dubbed the Olympics of Law Enforcement Service, WPFG is a biennial athletic event open to active and retired law enforcement and fire service personnel throughout the world.

The PNP athletes made a courtesy call to their chief, Police General Oscar Albayalde who warmly congratulated them.

“For years, we have been participating in this biennial events dubbed as the Olympics of the Law Enforcement as an opportunity to show that we are competent in sports and willing to forge camaraderie among our foreign counterparts,” Albayalde said. 

The next World Police and Fire Games will be in Rotterdam, The Netherlands on July 30 to August 8, 2021. Ella Dionisio/DMS
