Police corporal accidentally fires gun, killing himself while brother is injured

A police corporal died while his brother was injured after he accidentally shot himself while cleaning his firearm in Palawan Tuesday evening.

Police Lt.Colonel Socrates Faltado, spokesperson of the Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan) police, identified the victims as Police Corporal Melvin Rios, 37 and Roderick Rios, 39.

Rios is assigned at Provincial Drug Enforcement Unit -Palawan.

Initial investigation showed Rios accidentally discharged his firearm around 11:58 pm while his brother was beside him inside their house at Barangay Princess Urduja in Narra.

“Accidentally, the firearm fired hitting Police Corporal Melvin Rios on his temple while Roderick Rios sustained a gunshot wound on his right jaw,” Faltado said.

The victims were rushed to Narra Municipal Hospital but the police officer was later declared dead by a physician. Ella Dionisio/DMS
