PSC 2020 budget up to P671.9 million

November 19, 2019

The Philippine Sports Commission's (PSC) 2020 budget increased by P500 million, bringing the total to P671,964,000, said Senator Bong Go in a Senate hearing Tuesday.

During the interpellation by Senate Minority Franklin Drilon, Go - who is PSC's 2020 budget sponsor - revealed that the original budget for next year was P171.9 million. But, due to the ASEAN Para Games and Tokyo Summer Olympics which will be both held in 2020, an additional budget was adopted.

"There was an increase of P500 million from the national expenditure program, which is the president's budget, to the General Appropriations Act Bill which will be used for the preparation, hosting and participation for the 2020 (Tokyo)Olympic Games and 10th ASEAN Para Games," Go explained.

Go said the initial budget was for day-to-day operations of PSC.

As the host of the coming ASEAN Para Games, Go said most of the additional budget included by the House of Representatives will be used.

Go said out of the added P500 million, around P450  million will cover the ASEAN Para Games and P50 million  for the Tokyo Olympics.

The breakdown of the ASEAN Para Games funding, as explained by Go, follows: P78  million for athlete's village; P75 million each for sports and venues; P50 million each for ceremonies and cultural events, game services, and IT and telecom; P25 million for security; P21 million for human resources; P15 million for human resources; P14  million each for accreditation and marketing; P10 million for medical and doping control; P9 million for local organizing committee; P8 milliobn for protocol international relations; and P20 million for other expenses.

"We support the additional P500 million since it is really necessary for the 2020 olympics," Go said.

"We are still open for any amendments (in the budget)," he added. Cristina Eloisa Baclig/DMS
