Refrain from celebratory gunfire to mark end of Ramadan: PNP
June 5, 2019
The Philippine National Police ( PNP) reminded the public, especially Muslim Filipinos, to refrain from the traditional practice of celebratory gunfire in marking the end of Ramadan.
Police General Oscar Albayalde in a press briefing on Monday said the PNP joins Filipino Muslim brothers and sisters in this joyous celebration of this festive event.
“We remain alert and watchful for any untoward incident that may spoil the solemnity of this occasion,” said Albayalde.
“May I also remind everyone, especially in the South, to refrain from the traditional practice of celebratory gunfire,” he added.
Albayalde said this joyous occasion marks a distinct character of Filipino culture that observes high respect for religious freedom that affords unity and equality for all regardless of faith or ethnic divisions.
He said police units will strictly enforce operative laws against indiscriminate firing.
“A nationwide election gunban remains in effect until the culmination of the election period on June 12,” said Albayalde. Ella Dionisio/DMS
