February 19, 2020
Seven jeepney drivers in Makati City were arrested after testing positive for illegal drugs during a “Drunk and Drugged Driving Campaign” operation Wedneday morning.
Police Colonel Rogelio Simon, Makati police chief, said seven out of the 58 jeepney drivers at JP Rizal corner Pasong Tirad Street were tested positive for illegal drugs during their inspection around 9 am.
“All drivers tested positive for illegal use of drugs will be arrested and subject for inquest,” Simon said.
The operation was conducted by Makati City police with Land Transportation Office and Makati Anti-Drug Abuse Council (MADAC).
During the operation, an LTO enforcer will apprehend a jeepney driver violating traffic regulation, particularly reckless driving.
After a temporary operator’s permit (TOP) is issued, drivers will be referred to MADAC for drug testing. If the driver tests positive, the police will do the arrest and case filing.
Simon said the arrested drivers will face violation of Anti- Drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2013.
“This is a pro-active intervention so that the incident last February 12 will not happen again and ti assure the safety of all people,” Simon said.
Last February 12, one student died while seven schoolmates were injured after they were run over by a jeepney while crossing the street along the JP Rizal route.
During the investigation, it was found out that the driver was positive for illegal drugs. Ella Dionisio/DMS
