Stock index breaks 8,000 point mark, peso surges

Philippine shares rose while the peso gained against the US dollar on Monday, the first trading day of June.
The peso closed at P51.91 from Friday's P52.16. Volume at the foreign exchange portal of the Bankers Association of the Philippines reached $$782.85 million from $988.32 million.
The Philippine Stock Exchange index finished above the 8,000-point mark at 8,084.68 points, up 114.86 points. In the broader market, there were 120 gainers and 72 decliners while 48 shares were unchanged.
Volume reached 1.33 billion shares worth P10.02 billion from Friday's 669.51 million shares valued at P8.49 billion.
Most active shares were led by Ayala Land, up P2.95 to P52.45; Ayala Corp. up P12 to P931 and SM Prime, up 45 centavos to P40.25. DMS
