Stock index surges, peso gains

Philippine stocks gained, with the key index rising 1.4 percent while the peso rose slightly against the US dollar on Tuesday.
The Philippine Stock Exchange index finished at 7,451.08, up 102.87. In the broader market, there were 106 gainers, 75 decliners and 53 shares unchanged.
The peso ended at P52.77 against the US dollar from P52.80. Volume at the Bankers Association of the Philippines foreign exchange portal reached $906.85 million from $603.12 million.
Volume at the PSE reached 551.6 million shares worth P4.7 billion from 2.6 billion shares valued at P14.84 billion.
Most active shares were led by SM Prime, up 0.14 percent to P35.50; Ayala Land, up 4.22 percent to P42 and Ayala Corp., up 3.08 percent to P938. DMS
