May 15, 2019

Two China Coast Guard vessels followed Philippine and United States Coast Guard ships as they conducted capability training exercise near the Bajo de Masinloc or Scarborough Shoal on Tuesday.

Capt. Armando Balilo, Philippine Coast Guard spokesman, said the exercise between US Coast Guard Cutter Bertholf, BRP Batangas and BRP Kalanggaman was conducted near Scarborough Shoal around 9 am.

"Two big China Coast Guard ships were spotted while the exercise is being held," he said.

"The exercise is the kick-off activity of the visit of US Coast Guard Cutter Bertholf in the Philippines, it is the first USCG that visits the country while deployed in Asean region," he added.

Balilo said during the exercise the PCG vessels were not challenged by the Chinese Coast Guard like what they reportedly do to Filipino vessels.

He said the scenario during the exercise includes a joint PCG and USCG rescue operation for passengers of a sinking boat.

Balilo said the participating vessels also conduct communication exercises as part of the activity.

The US Coast Guard Cutter Berthol is expected to dock at Pier 15, South Harbor Wednesday.

Balilo said during their visit that will last until May 18, the PCG will host a welcome dinner for the USCG with US Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim.

He said the PCG and USCG will also conduct friendship game and join the Brigada Eskwela during their stay. Robina Asido/DMS
