Two fixers arrested at Manila City Hall
November 15, 2019
Authorities arrested two fixers at the Manila City Hall for extorting money to process registration of birth certificate.
According to a police report, the fixers identified as Rosalinda Lagatierra and Catherine Corpuz attempted to charge a married couple P5,000 to process the child's late birth certificate registration.
Manila Public Information Officer chief Julius Leonen said the local government charges less.
"Manila Civil Registry Office (MCRO) chief Chris Tenorio said the city government only charges P240 for late registration," said Leonen in a statement.
Both suspects were nabbed in an entrapment operation led by the Manila Police District Special Mayor's Reaction Team (SMaRT) and the Manila City Registry Office.
The suspects will face charges for robbery and extortion.
The arrest ensued after the victim identified as Quirico Corpuz filed a complaint against the suspects. Corpuz said the two fixers refused to issue a certificate of live birth unless he pays P5,000.
Tenorio warned fixers who are still operating at the city hall to end their illegal business.
"You should stop. It is the mayor's mandate to end all illegal transaction inside the Manila City Hall," he said. Cristina Eloisa Baclig/DMS
