UPDATE DOH announces record number of deaths, recoveries from COVID-19
July 13, 2020
Record number of deaths. recoveries and cases from the coronavirus disease ( COVID-19) were reported by the Department of Health (DOH) on Monday.
One hundred sixty two deaths were announced to bring the total to 1,534. This surpassed 50 recorded in April 12.
Recoveries surged to 2,009 to bring the aggregate to 16,046, surpassing the previous high mark of 807 on July 11.
Total active cases, net of deaths and recoveries reached 38, 679.
DOH said 92.2 percent of these cases were mild, 7.1 percent asymptomatic, 0.3 percent critical and 0.4 percent severe.
There were 2,124 new cases to raise the tally to 56,259. Fresh cases, which were released in the last three days, reached 1,690 while late cases amounted to 434.
Late Sunday night, the DOH said it would be unable to release its case Bulletin for July 12 due to the "significant volume of data" it is validating.
It said based on initial findings, the DOH saw an increase in Sunday's number of reported cases, recoveries, and deaths.
In a televised press briefing on Monday, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the deaths on Sunday did not happen in a day.
She said majority happened last June with 90 (56 percent), while others occurred in May (20, 12 percent), and April (1, 1 percent).
"Out of 162 deaths, only 51 (31 percent) happened in July. And of the 51, 18 happened last week, while the other 33 happened in the first week of July," said Vergeire.
Vergeire said 804 recoveries were tallied since Saturday.
She attributed the delays in reporting deaths and recoveries to submission of reports of local government units (LGUs).
"Our LGUs have the direct access to the information and developments in their respective areas regarding COVID-19. Because of this, some data are not immediately transmitted to the DOH," said Vergeire.
Vergeire said the public should expect more data to be reported and validated by the DOH in the coming days.
"We expect more deaths and recoveries to be reported in the coming days as a result of our data reconciliation efforts, and we thank our LGUs for their support and cooperation the last few weeks," said Vergeire. DMS
