Duterte Declares General Yamashita’s Surrender A Public Holiday
September 16, 2019
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte marked the surrender of Japanese wartime general, Tomoyuki Yamashita, to American and Filipino forces in Ifugao province in 1945 by declaring Sept. 3 as a working public holiday. Known as the Tiger of Malaya for leading the capture of the British-held bastion of Singapore at the outbreak of World War Two, Yamashita was ordered to defend the Philippines from returning American forces led by Gen Douglas MacArthur towards the end of the war in 1944. He was tried and convicted by a US military tribunal for war crimes, and executed by hanging in a prison camp in Los Banos, Laguna in 1946. His remains were later on buried in a cemetery in Japan.
