Duterte Not Attending Emperor Naruhito’s Enthronement
October 3, 2019
President Rodrigo Duterte is not attending the enthronement ceremony of Emperor Naruhito on October 22, his spokesperson said. In a press conference, presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo told reporters Duterte is scheduled to leave for Russia and Thailand next month and Chile in November. He said Duterte will most likely send a representative to the historic event. Naruhito succeeded his father, the 85-year old Emperor Akihito, last May 1 after the former monarch gave up the Chrysanthemum Throne — the first time it happened in over 200 years.
