Philippines To Highlight Lapu-Lapu’s Victory Over Magellan In 2021 Commemoration
September 16, 2019
The Philippines will highlight the victory of native chieftain Lapu-lapu over explorer Ferdinand Magellan in the battle of Mactan to mark the 500th year commemoration of the arrival of the Spanish expedition in the islands in 2021. Despite Magellan’s death, the survivors of his Spanish flotilla completed their voyage back to Seville, Spain under the leadership of Sebastian El Cano. This was later on hailed as the first circumnavigation of the world. The third major event to be commemorated in the country in 2021 will be the introduction of Christianity with the first mass held in Limasawa island and the first baptism in Cebu.
