Full statement of Japanese foreign minister Motegi Toshimitsu after the bilateral meeting with his Philippine counterpart, Foreign Secretary Teodoro Locsin, Jr, at the Makati Shangrila Hotel in Makati on January 9, 2020. In his statement, Motegi pointed out the strategic location of the Philippines in the region. He also welcomed the lifting of martial law in Mindanao and expressed support for the implementation of the peace agreement between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). He also thanked the Philippines for lifting the ban on importation of food products from Japan imposed after the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011.
Motegi and Locsin also witnessed the signing of an exchange of notes for the Metro Manila Priority Bridges Seismic Improvement Project Phase 2. Motegi’s visit to the Philippines is part of a four-nation Southeast Asian swing — his first since being appointed as foreign minister in September last year.
